Poetry Each school year, students in my English Advanced 8 are required to complete an independent poetry portfolio assignment. This assignment will begin in April (National Poetry Month) and will conclude the week before school ends. Because it is a long-term assignment, students are required to complete the majority of the work on their own. This is not to say that I will not assist them; in fact, we will work each day in class on some aspect of the portfolio. Here is a word of caution: DO NOT procrastinate. I have seen a few students make an attempt to get the project completed one or two days before its due date, and the project itself is not of high-quality. Believe me, I will know if you choose to put time and effort into the project or if you choose to put it off until the last minute. |
Short Stories
| Film Study "Escape from Sobibor"
"To Kill a Mockingbird"
"Nuit et Brouillard" The French documentary "Nuit et Brouillard" ("Night and Fog") is an excellent story of what the Jews went through while in the concentration camps. This documentary is extremely graphic, but it is important to remember that these events really happened and should never be forgotten. We will watch this documentary in class. "Dead Poets Society" Each year, students in Mr. Ludwig's English Academic 8 and English Advanced 8 will watch the film "The Dead Poets Society". This film will be the final assignment (other than the final exam) for the school year. Please be sure to complete all of the journal entries that go along with the film. Also, there is a final writing assignment that is required. |
Musicals "Sweeney Todd"
Many of you are familiar with Tim Burton's adaptation of the classic Stephen Sondheim musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." Although his adaptation is one that has attracted the attention of many viewers (especially since it stars Johnny Depp), it is not true to the Stephen Sondheim musical. In class, we will watch Stephen Sondheim's version. This version stars Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett and George Hearn as Sweeney Todd. It was filmed live off-Broadway. For some of you, this may be the first live musical you have ever seen. Please have an open mind and let it grow on you. You will have difficulties at first adjusting to the language since most of the actors and actresses speak in an English dialect called Cockney. It was the dialect of the peasant class, and can be rather difficult to understand until you get used to hearing it. By the end of the show, I'm sure many, if not all, of you will actually enjoy it. And, if you've seen it before, please do not ruin the ending of it for anyone. "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" Viewing Guide - Please answer all questions. "West Side Story"
"West Side Story" is, and will always be, my favorite musical. The plot (which is a modern day "Romeo and Juliet"), the music, the lyrics...together, they are just beautiful. We will study "West Side Story" not as an adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet" but as a musical and piece of literature. Below are the materials you will need for our study of "WSS". "West Side Story" Discussion Points The questions that go along with "West Side Story" are more discussion than anything else. Please keep in mind the following: 1) We have read and watched other plays and musicals. Remember Freytag's Pyramid, staging, etc. when discussing these points; 2) Offer more of a substantial response than "I liked it" or "I didn't like it"; 3) Consider lyrics, musicality, choreography, acting, etc. All of this is important when analyzing a musical piece. | Miscellany
